Southern California Minority Business Development Council (SCMBDC) has a new name: Southern California Minority Supplier Development Council, or SCMSDC.

Small businesses account for 52 percent of all U.S. workers, according to the Small Business Administration. Thus, their impact on the environment is significant. In honor of Earth Day, April 22, we're featuring ways MBEs and small businesses can reduce their impact on the environment.

Since I was appointed SCMBDC president in February, I've given a lot of thought to the council's past achievements and how we can build on these to better serve our corporate members and minority business enterprises (MBEs). 

The first class of the Bridges to Business Success (B2BS), the advanced business training program focused on building the capacity of minority small business owners, recently graduated with newly gained skills and the opportunity to bid on construction projects.

Background: Since starting Ingenious Information Technology (IIT) more than 15 years ago, Vandana Gupta has seen a proliferation of IT consulting firms enter the marketplace. While many have come and gone, IIT has been able to successfully compete and grow by adapting its strategy to changing business conditions.

Twenty-two years ago, when Grace Whitcomb joined Southern California Edison's (SCE) Minority and Small Business Development Program, the company's primary outreach to diverse suppliers was through trade associations and the use of such suppliers was under the radar for many SCE employees.

It is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed on a minority business enterprise (MBE) -  National Minority Supplier Development Council's (NMSDC) Corporate Plus designation. And three SCMBDC-certified firms -- Blackstone Consulting, Inc., Pacific Rim Capital, Inc., and XVI Global Solutions --  recently joined this highly coveted group.

LOS ANGELES, Mar. 12, 2012 -- A discussion on leveraging cloud technology to advance business goals and some good old-fashioned, face-to-face networking were among the highlights at Southern California Minority Business Development Councils (SCMBDC) 36th annual Minority Business Opportunity Day (MBOD). The event was held February 23 at the Pacific Palms Conference Resort in Industry Hills with Toyota serving as title sponsor for the third consecutive year.
